Our First Pet!

We got a hamster Tuesday night! The kids decided to combine their birthday money and get a hamster (Thanks everyone who sent them money for their birthdays!) It's a Winter White Dwarf Hamster and as you can see in the pic's it is pretty little. In fact it is so small that the guy at the pet store wasn't able to tell us the sex. On the way home Milt and I were trying to help the kids come up with a name, we told Elli that she and Shawn both had to agree on a name and that he had to say it was Ok. Milt and I started spouting off all different kinds of random names, mostly girl names because Elli was just sure it was a girl. Every time we would come to a name Elli would get all excited and say "Ya! I like that name! Lets name her that!!!" Then we would tell her to ask Shawn, so she would and every time he would say something like "No, I don't like that sorry guys!" or "No, I don't want that name, I just want to eat marshmellows when we get home, sorry guys!" I think he was doing it partly just to bug Ell, but it was so funny! They finally agreed on a name, but it was funny to me that the only name they could agree on was Edna! (Those of you who know my mom especially know why that's funny) Now we have a hamster named Edna of which we don't even know the sex, He he! The kids love it though, a little too much I'm afraid! This kind of hamster is supposed to live 1 1/2 to 2 years, but I think his little life might be cut a little short. Poor little guy! So my question all of you is, How do you teach a 2 year old boy to be soft with a hamster the size of a golf ball?

Shawn likes to hold it upside down!

and he likes to give it kisses too! I'm sure that hamster love that!

That is a cute little pet. I have to say that I know your mom, but I have never known any way to tie her to the name Edna. However, when we were little there was a lady named Edna that lived three houses down from us on the corner in Roy. She was really old and we used to go to her house a lot. I think mostly because she gave us candy everytime we went. What kid can resist free candy?

So cute! I never had a hampster, but loved having little snuggly pet rats when I was growing up. I don't know how to get little kids to be soft- the poor little creatures just have to learn to bear with being a little squashed I think. I like the name Edna!

It is about time you post something!:) That is so cute! I love the name! What did your mom say about it?haha I used to love her reaction when you would call her that! As far as helping Shawn not kill the little thing he just has to grow out of it. My boys killed there first pet it was a frog and we put it in their swiming pool so they could play with it and the next thing we knew it was belly up dead from they stepping on it. Sad :(
